BEAUTY HOW-TO: STATEMENT LIP
Michelle and I as fashion bloggers is a pretty casual affair. Shooting outfit posts usually involve rocking up to Paige's house (for me, sometimes hideously hungover) with a week-old hair and half-finished makeup. We bust out the dry shampoo, slap on some Nars foundation and it's time to work those angles, baby. For Michelle's latest outfit post (which you can peruse here), we agreed it was the perfect opportunity to finally 1) doll her up for her outfit shoot and 2) create a beauty post from it! So here we are, how to create a statement lip...and other bits and bobs:
Obligatory 'before' shot...
A primer helps to keep your base on for longer by giving your foundation something to grip onto. It evens out the skin tone and depending on your skin type, it can help mattify oilier skin or hydrate parched skin. We love Smashbox's Photo Finish Colour Correcting Primer because it's green tinge helps to counteract any redness in the skin. Less redness = less foundation required!
Always work your foundation outwards from the centre of the face. I prefer to use my fingers to blend as opposed to a foundation brush. The warmth of the fingers help melt the product into the skin resulting in a smoother, more flawless finish.
Most foundations are too heavy for the delicate undereye area. This is where a lightweight, illuminating concealer comes in. Nothing beats the cult classic YSL's Touche Éclat. Three dots along the under-eye area, a dab on the lid, blend it all in with your fingers.
If the eyes are the windows to our souls, then our eyebrows are like the awnings that sit above said windows... errm bottom line is brows need to be defined if you want to achieve a slick polished look. If you're thinking "ain't nobody got time for dat", then you need this product by Benefit, aptly named Gimme Brows. Powder and eyebrow gel in one, simply brush through brows for instant definition.
Everyone loves a good winged eyeliner, not many claim to have mastered it. I think the trick is...choose a bloody good product that does the work for you. My pick is Stila's Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner. The brush is just the right size and is tapered to my liking so that one swipe leaves you with the perfect little flick. Then simply build upon that for more of a dramatic look. In this instance, we're keeping it small and fine. Let's keep our winged eyes on the prize, the statement lip...remember?!
"Ooh ooh, aah aah, sexy eyes."
To some this may look like a torture device, but lemme tell you something. Once you use an eyelash curler, you'll never go back to applying mascara on pesky poker straight lashes.
Ahhh one of the best beauty inventions since eyeshadow primer. Last year, Lancôme launched Grandiose, a revolutionary mascara with a...*deep breath*...swan-neck wand. It's pure genius if you ask me. Years of working as a make-up artist, I broke a few mascara wands trying to achieve the same effect. With a bent wand, you can easily reach the base of your lashes and wiggle the brush through for an even application. The formula is a stand-out too, ticking all the boxes for a stellar mascara. Volumising, lengthening, curling...you want it, this bad boy's got it.
Time for some colour! Do yourself a favour and try Nars Laguna Bronzer if you haven't already seen the light. There's a reason why it's every Beauty Editors' number one bronzer.
Yeah we're riding the Nars train here (as you've probably guessed, we're BIG fans). A dewy glow with a rosy tint can be achieved with this little darlin', Nars Illuminating Liquid in Orgasm. Simply dot on cheeks and BLEND.
"Crack us a smile, love."
Why hello there, Orgasm? Yes please! Introducing Nars' number one, best-selling powder blush. Not hard to see why. Suits every skin tone and imparts a subtle sheen with the sweetest rosy pink flush.
Now hold up, hang on a second. Before you go applying your statement lip, we need to give our lips some tender loving care. Our pick of the bunch, an oldie but a goodie, Carmex. Combining deeply hydrating ingredients including Lanolin, Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter, Beeswax and Menthol, we love it for the long-lasting hydration and tingling sensation it leaves on the lips.
Now that your lips are drenched in moisture, go on, grab your bright/dark/eye-popping lipstick and get colouring. We can't go past Nars (yet again) Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. Creamy texture with full impact colour, it's long-wearing, kiss-, smudge- and budge-proof.
'After' shot. Think we got ourselves a regulation hottie.
